World of Warcraft: Forever

Choosing your first class

Your class matters far more than your race. Answer five questions for a starting point, then read the cards: what each class does, what Blizzard changed for Forever, and which races can play it.

The short answer

If you are a casual player, or new to WoW, play a Hunter. It is the easiest class to understand.

THOMAS, DLONEM

A Hunter's pet holds the enemy's attention while you attack from range, so most fights are forgiving. Warrior and Paladin are the other two I would point a new player at. Pick whichever race you like the look of, and play the faction your friends are on.

Five questions

The quiz

Pick one answer for each. Your best fit appears as soon as all five are answered, and nothing is saved or sent.

All nine

Every class

Roles are the ones Blizzard's class pages describe. Blizzard says an Enhancement Shaman can tank small groups for a while, so Shamans are not listed as tanks. Filter by the role you want, or read straight through.

Hunter

Damage

A pet holds the enemy while you attack from range, which makes it the easiest class to understand.

My pick for a casual or brand-new player. Plan for ammunition and pet taming: years ago, they were the two things that caught me out.

Fights: Ranged (Survival fights up close) · Heaviest armor: Mail
Specs: Beast Mastery, Marksmanship, Survival

  • Pets gain stats from your gear, and every pet family can learn Bite or Claw.
  • Foxes are a new pet family.
  • Traps work in combat now, and Aimed Shot is a normal ability at level 20.
  • No stuns or interrupts, and ranged attacks do not work within 8 yards.

Alliance: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Skyborne (High Order)
Horde: Orc, Tauren, Troll, Skyborne (Windshaper)

Warrior

TankDamage

Blizzard says a Warrior fits any group as a tank or a damage dealer.

One of the two I would point a new player at, after the Hunter.

Fights: Melee · Heaviest armor: Plate
Specs: Arms, Fury, Protection

  • Victory Rush arrives at level 20: kill something and you can hit back for a heal.
  • Tactical Mastery is baseline at 14, so you keep 10 Rage when you switch stances.
  • Critical hits give 75% more Rage.
  • Blizzard's warning: few ways to recover from heavy damage.

Alliance: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, Skyborne (High Order)
Horde: Orc, Undead, Tauren, Troll, Skyborne (Windshaper)

Source

Paladin

TankHealerDamage

Heavy armor and healing of your own, and it can tank, heal or deal damage.

The other class I would point a new player at.

Fights: Melee · Heaviest armor: Plate
Specs: Holy, Protection, Retribution

  • Undead Paladin is new: in Forever, Horde players can be Paladins.
  • Blessing of Kings is now a normal Paladin spell, not a talent.
  • Human, Dwarf and Undead are the only races that can be one.

Alliance: Human, Dwarf
Horde: Undead

Warlock

Damage

Ranged damage with a demon pet at your side, which helps a lot when you play alone.

I took a Human Warlock through the beta, Hall of Thanes included.

Fights: Ranged · Heaviest armor: Cloth
Specs: Affliction, Demonology, Destruction

  • Troll Warlock is new to the Horde.
  • Cloth armor: let the pet take the hits.

Alliance: Human, Gnome
Horde: Orc, Undead, Troll

Mage

Damage

Strong single-target and area damage, Polymorph for crowd control, and you make your own food and water.

Fights: Ranged · Heaviest armor: Cloth
Specs: Arcane, Fire, Frost

  • Frostfire Bolt is a new level 40 spell that counts as both Fire and Frost.
  • Orc Mage is new to the Horde.
  • Blizzard's warning: fragile up close.

Alliance: Human, Gnome, Skyborne (High Order)
Horde: Orc, Undead, Troll

Priest

HealerDamage

Blizzard calls it the most versatile healer in the game. Shadow is its damage spec.

Fights: Ranged · Heaviest armor: Cloth
Specs: Discipline, Holy, Shadow

  • Fear Ward and Devouring Plague are open to every Priest at level 20.
  • Shadow Word: Death is baseline at 32.
  • Gnome Priest is new to the Alliance.
  • Blizzard's warning: cloth, and few ways to escape.

Alliance: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome
Horde: Undead, Troll

Shaman

HealerDamage

Melee or spell damage, or healing, in mail with a shield, and totems that help the whole group.

Fights: Melee or ranged · Heaviest armor: Mail
Specs: Elemental, Enhancement, Restoration

  • Dwarf Shaman is new: the Alliance gets Shamans.
  • Totems are on a 1-second global cooldown, and buff totems last 5 minutes.
  • Call of the Elements (level 20) drops all four totems in one cast.
  • Blizzard says Enhancement can tank small groups for a while.

Alliance: Dwarf
Horde: Orc, Tauren, Troll, Skyborne (Windshaper)

Source

Rogue

Damage

Melee damage, with stealth to pick your fights.

Fights: Melee · Heaviest armor: Leather
Specs: Assassination, Combat, Subtlety

  • Damage is the only role.
  • Every race but the Tauren can be one, including both Skyborne.

Alliance: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, Skyborne (High Order)
Horde: Orc, Undead, Troll, Skyborne (Windshaper)

Druid

TankHealerDamage

Blizzard says a Druid can fill any role with the right gear and talents.

Fights: Melee or ranged · Heaviest armor: Leather
Specs: Balance, Feral, Restoration

  • All potions and almost all similar items now work in animal forms.
  • Revive is a new out-of-combat resurrection at level 12.
  • Tiger's Fury is gone, replaced by the Shifting Power talent.
  • No snares, silences or interrupts.

Alliance: Night Elf, Skyborne (High Order)
Horde: Tauren, Skyborne (Windshaper)

Who can be what

Races and classes

From Blizzard's race and class list. Six pairs are new to Forever: Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest, Orc Mage, Undead Paladin and Troll Warlock. The Skyborne are a new race on both factions: the Alliance's High Order can be Mages, the Horde's Windshapers can be Shamans, and both can be Druids, Hunters, Rogues and Warriors. They start on Zephras Isle and come with the Forever upgrade packs.

Once you have chosen

Talents and trainers

  • You learn spells from your class trainer as you level, and they cost gold. Visit one every couple of levels.
  • Talents start at level 10. Each tree has bigger talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points; the 16-point one is new to Forever.
  • To change your talents, visit a class trainer in a major city.
  • Dual specialization arrives at level 40, so you can keep two sets of talents.

Quick answers

Questions

What is the easiest class in WoW Forever?

For a new or casual player, the Hunter. Your pet holds the enemy while you attack from range. Watch your ammunition and your pet's level when you tame a new one.

Does my race matter?

Much less than your class. Pick the look you like and the faction your friends are on. Race does decide which classes you can play, so check the table.

Which classes can tank?

Warriors, Paladins and Druids. Blizzard also says an Enhancement Shaman can tank small groups for a while.

Which classes can heal?

Priests, Paladins, Shamans and Druids.

What are the new race and class combinations?

Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest, Orc Mage, Undead Paladin and Troll Warlock, plus the new Skyborne race.

Can I change my mind later?

Not on the same character: your class is for good. Everyone starts at level 1 in Forever, and there is no character boost.

Play with people

Find a guild

WoW is better with people, especially in a game where nothing forms groups for you. If you play Alliance on the Normal ruleset in North America, The Grey Company is my guild: leveling and social, every time zone welcome. In game, send people to dlonem.com/grey.
