WoW Forever dungeon guide

Hall of Thanes

The first new dungeon most Alliance players will see in Forever, beneath Ironforge. How to find the door, which quests to pick up first, all four bosses, and what my own beta run as a level 13 Human Warlock taught me. The pictures are from that run.

Ironforge

Getting there

The Hall is in Old Ironforge, the part of the city beneath the High Seat. The way in is easy to walk past.

  1. Start at the Great Forge in the middle of Ironforge and face the High Seat, where King Magni stands.
  2. Walk into the king's hall and turn left. Look for a passage covered in cobwebs. Warcraft Tavern puts it at 43.5, 52.0; my minimap read 46.3, 52.3 as I went through.
  3. Follow it down the stairs. I passed 38.1, 52.9 on the way.
  4. The portal is at the bottom, around 28.4, 47.8. Mind your footing on the way down: the city is built over lava, and a fall is fatal.

Step 4. The portal. In my run the minimap read 28.4, 47.8 here. Other players' names are blurred.
Five quests

The quests

The Dungeon Journal lists five quests for the Hall. Three you can pick up at the door or inside. The main one starts out in Dun Morogh, and the last one starts at the end of the dungeon.

The in-game Dungeon Journal open on Hall of Thanes, listing five quests and the rewards for Old Ironforge Incursion
The Dungeon Journal at the door, from my beta run: five quests, and the reward choices for Old Ironforge Incursion. The beta's journal listed the dungeon as LV 13-20; Blizzard's beta post says 13 to 18.

The main quest: Old Ironforge Incursion

A Visitor to Dun Morogh→Farsen's Watch→Nip 'Em in the Bud→Underground Map→Old Ironforge Incursion

Beldin Steelgrill at Steelgrill's Depot sends you to Earthseer Farsen, outside Ironforge at 64.8, 58.5. Farsen asks you to kill Dark Iron Spies around 76.7, 60.7, and one of them drops a Dark Iron Map. Use the map and take it back to Farsen (in my quest log that step read "Deliver the Dark Iron Map to Earthseer Farsen in Dun Morogh"). He then gives you Old Ironforge Incursion: kill Durgen Dirgehammer, the last boss, and take his head to King Magni.

The reward in my journal was a choice of the Calibrated Blunderbuss, the Ironforge Greathammer or Deepblaze, plus 3,200 experience and reputation with Ironforge and the Gnomeregan Exiles. Those are beta numbers and can change.

The other four

Important Heirlooms

Thom Filch, outside, by the bridge leading in

Collect 8 Dwarven Heirlooms. They sit on raised, candle-lit platforms along the corridors, and the vaults in the last room hold enough for everyone.

Reward: Dwarven Tome (off-hand)

The Restless Dead

Afadra Dunwall, up the stairs on the way in

Kill 15 Enraged Apparitions and 10 Tormented Souls, the ghosts in the first rooms. You will kill most of them anyway.

An Ancient Grudge

Ghostly Attendant, in the second room

Kill Faldrim Anvilmar, the first boss. If you walk out instead of using your Hearthstone, you pass the Attendant again to hand it in.

Reward: Catacomb Cloak

The Treaty of Understanding

A tablet in a vault in the last room

Take it to King Magni in Ironforge. It is an experience quest. Old Ironforge Incursion goes to him too.

Layout

The route

The Hall is small, but the corridors look alike and it can feel like a maze. This is the order most groups take, from Warcraft Tavern's map. Tap a boss to jump to its tactics.

  1. 1The entranceTormented Souls and Enraged Apparitions, both for The Restless Dead. Then west, down the left corridor.
  2. 2The Ghostly AttendantPick up An Ancient Grudge.
  3. B1Anvilmar's RestA big chamber around a huge tomb, full of ghosts. Faldrim Anvilmar.
  4. 3The south-east corridorDark Iron Dwarves: Looters, Bloodhound Runts, Engineers and Summoners, and kegs of blasting powder.
  5. B2A natural cavernThe carved tombs give way to raw rock. Magmatus.
  6. 4Back into the HallA pack of four Dark Iron Dwarves with two kegs beside them.
  7. B3The hallwayA stone golem on patrol. Plunder.
  8. 5The bridgeLesser Stone Golems stand guard. Cross north.
  9. B4The Reliquary of KingsA round room lined with vault doors. Durgen Dirgehammer, and the Treaty tablet.

Four fights

The bosses

Tactics from Wowhead's and Warcraft Tavern's walkthroughs, checked against what I saw in my run. Pick your role to see only your part.

1

Faldrim Anvilmar

Undead · Anvilmar's Rest

My Warlock re-summoning his Voidwalker mid-fight, while Faldrim casts Mind Blast. Other players' names are blurred.
Mind BlastAnvilmar's Curse
  • Clear the ghosts in the room before you pull. He does not bring them with him, but you want the space.
  • Anvilmar's Curse goes on you: 20% slower attacks and casts for ten minutes, and you become immune to poison and bleed effects. Wowhead calls it nasty; Warcraft Tavern says you can live with it if nobody can remove it.
  • If you can remove curses, take Anvilmar's Curse off the tank.
  • Mind Blast can be interrupted. It is not required, but it saves the healer some mana.

Kill him for An Ancient Grudge.

2

Magmatus

Elemental · the cavern (my map called it Dark Iron Ingress)

Fighting Magmatus. The Dark Iron Summoner beside him is casting Fireball, with a Bloodhound Runt in the same pull. Other players' names are blurred.
Fire pulsesCombust (on my cast bar)Dark Iron Summoner add
  • Kill the Dark Iron Summoner first, and clear some of the trash around him before you pull.
  • Tank Magmatus away from the group. His fire hits everyone near him.
  • Watch every melee player, not only the tank. The pulses hurt anyone standing close.
  • Ranged: stand back. Melee: keep an eye on your own health.

A later attempt, after we had swapped both our tank and our healer. His cast bar reads Combust.
3

Plunder

Elemental · a stone golem on patrol in the hallway
KnockbackPatrols
  • His knockback throws players a long way. Make sure nobody lands in a trash pack that could wipe the group.
  • Pull him away from other enemies and keep his back to a wall, so you always know where the knockback sends people.
  • Stand where a knockback can't throw you into another pack.
4

Durgen Dirgehammer

Humanoid · leader of the Dark Iron incursion · the Reliquary of Kings
FearLesser Stone Golems
  • Clear the trash along the edges of the room, but leave the golems: they are linked to him, and pulling one pulls him. His fear scatters people into anything you left standing.
  • If you do wipe, golems you killed stay dead, so the next pull is easier.
  • When the pull starts, have the group kill the two Lesser Stone Golems first.
  • Fear will scatter the group. A Shaman's Tremor Totem helps; without one, expect to heal people who have run out of range.
  • Golems first, then Durgen.

Loot his head for Old Ironforge Incursion. He also drops Durgen's Crescent Axe, a strong one-handed axe. Open the vaults for the Treaty tablet and the last heirlooms.

Between the bosses

Trash worth knowing

The packs are not complicated, but they hit hard, especially if your group is low level or has no crowd control. The ones to know:

  • Bloodhound Runts put a disease called Infected Wounds on you, which raises the physical damage you take for five minutes. Cure it with a cleanse, Simple Poultices from First Aid, or a Dwarf's Stoneform.
  • Dark Iron Engineers throw dynamite that hits an area. Spread out a little.
  • Dark Iron Summoners cast Fireball and summon fire elementals. Interrupt the summon.
  • Blasting powder kegs sit beside some packs. Shoot one from range and it damages everything around it. Before the pack of four back in the Hall, two kegs together will soften them up.
First-hand

How my run went

I describe it as a light warm-up for Blackrock Depths. It is much smaller, but it can feel like a maze in the same way.

THOMAS, DLONEM

I picked Relaxed in Group Finder. Our tank said he was new, and he should have picked Learning. We ended up swapping both the tank and the healer, and my first run took about an hour and a half. A group that knows the way should finish in 30 minutes to an hour.

Quick answers

Questions

What level do I need for Hall of Thanes?

Blizzard lists it for levels 13 to 18. The beta's own Dungeon Journal said 13 to 20. I went in at 13, and that was fine with a decent group.

Where is the entrance?

Under the High Seat in Ironforge. Go into the king's hall, turn left into the cobwebbed passage and follow the stairs down. Step by step, with coordinates.

Can the Horde run it?

It is built for the Alliance, as their answer to the Horde's Ragefire Chasm. Wowhead lists all five quests as Alliance-only, and Warcraft Tavern says Horde players can get in but it is hard at the right level. One thing to watch: in my beta run the Dungeon Journal showed a Horde crest next to An Ancient Grudge and Important Heirlooms, so those two may be open to both factions.

How long does it take?

30 minutes to an hour with a group that knows the way. Leave more for a first run.

Is it in Group Finder?

Yes. You list with a playstyle (Learning, Relaxed, Competitive or Carry Offered). Group Finder does not teleport anyone, so you still walk to the portal. More on that in the beginner's guide.
